Summer Evenings in Martinez

It’s been hot lately. Really hot. But once evening rolls around and the temperature starts to drop, it becomes much more pleasant to get outside. One of my favorite ways to enjoy a summer evening in Martinez is simply to get on my bike and ride. No real destination is necessary, although I usually find myself heading toward the waterfront.
An Evening at the Waterfront
The waterfront is especially nice toward the end of the day. There’s usually a breeze, people are out walking, and you’ll see plenty of locals fishing from the pier. It’s a good place to stop, get off the bike and sit for a while. And the sunsets can be glorious.
Recently, I sat at the pier watching the sun go down while a tugboat slowly passed by. People were fishing nearby, the water was calm, and for a few minutes I was perfectly content to just sit there and watch. Sometimes that’s enough.
Riding Back Through Downtown
When I head back toward downtown, the sun has gone down and the lights have come on.
This is one of my favorite times to ride through town. The string lights are glowing overhead. Restaurants and patios have colorful mood lighting. There might be music coming from somewhere along Main Street. And everything looks just a little different than it does during the day.
Being on a bike also makes it easier to notice the smaller things. I can slow down, look around and stop when something catches my attention. In fact, some of the things I’ve shared on Downtown Martinez Live are things I discovered simply because I happened to be riding my bike and noticed them.
Take an Evening Ride
You don’t need to make an event of it. Just wait until the heat starts to ease. Hop on your bike and take a ride through downtown. Head on down to the waterfront. Watch the sunset. Sit at the pier for a bit. See what you notice along the way. Sometimes, I just sit and meditate. The pier is a great spot for a mind cleanse.
Martinez is pretty nice in the evening. Especially on two wheels. 🚲🌅
